Even though diarrhea is common in infants and toddlers and viral, bacterial or parasites could the reasons. But, if your child gets diarrhea during winters one of the most common virus causing this condition could be Rota virus. Some of the symptoms of diarrhea in winter include vomiting, water stools and increased need to drink water.

The cause of diarrhea due to Rota virus is due to the use of contaminated food or water. This could in-turn lead to dehydration and and electrolyte imbalance. If care is not taken it could lead to life threatening conditions like kidney injury or renal failure. This Rota Virus caused diarrhea is also known as stomach flu.

Antibiotics are not available for viral diarrhea and hence if the dehydration is more, hospitalization becomes necessary and immediate. Zinc syrup can help reduce the frequency of viral diarrhoea as well as further attack. Here are few tips on stomach flu and dealing with diarrhea.

Hydration – The primary step is to keep your child hydrated continuously by feeding water, milk or ORS which is a concoction of water, sugar and salt. If your child takes fruit juices or soup, go enough. Medicine do not work for diarrhea so do not use without consultation of your doctor.

Diet – Keeping feeding the child regular diet you do but just divide them in smaller meals. Also add some salty foods like soup and pretzels. Foods like Baked poultry, cooked eggs, bananas, bread and pasta, cereals, cooked vegetables, rice, etc is a good idea. Just that when giving milk use low fat milk as it is easy to digest.

Avoid – Avoid giving them fried foods, processed or fast foods, caffeine and carbonated drinks.

To prevent diarrhoea make it a habit in your child and adults to make hand washing a habit and vaccinate your kid also. Proper oral hygiene as well and keep your kids warm across the winter.

It’s not a new that it ain’t easy to ask a kid to take care of their own teeth. Furthermore, if they have braces it’s even more difficult. Here are few tips on taking care of your child’s braces if he or she has one.

BRUSH TWICE AFTER MEALS

Before brushing your child’s teeth you need to remove the elastic or rubber bands around the braces.

Us a soft bristled or power tooth brush to clean the teeth under the wires as well as the gums

Brush slowly and gently tooth by tooth in circular and back and forth motion

Brush the teeth at an angle of 45 degree where the gums and teeth meet

Rinse properly so that all the food particles are removed.

FLOSS DAILY

Oral routine mostly involves brushing teeth twice a day to the maximum. But one of the important teeth care routines include flossing daily. Using a floss threader in order to pull it out from under the braces is a good idea. Another good alternative is trying out thin interdental cleaning brushes.

AVOID HARD CHEWS

Cleaning braces isn’t as easy as cleaning teeth so better to avoid eating foods that damage your braces or make cleaning a task. Hence avoid hard candies and sticky food so as to keep your braces away from harm’s way and do away with cleaning hassles.

GO FOR REGULAR CHECKUPS

Braces need to be adjusted on a regular basis and hence you need visiting a dentist is important. Due to adjustments, you may experience pain or discomfort for some time. So, you need to brush teeth carefully and if you find any kind of damage you need to check it up with a dentist.

Following dental routines properly could help you manage your childs braces efficiently and avoid damage to them.

Parenting children is already a task, more so if your children are the super active types. The work increases by manifolds when it comes to parenting kids with special needs. The reason being the extra support that these kids need does at times take a toll on the parents. Being a parent of a special child is like on duty round the clock even on vacations or during play time. Burnout is a common issue thus amongst parents be is children with specials needs or not. It’s okay. Parents need to understand that at the end of the day they are human beings and have a body that needs rest when it needs rest.

Preventing burnout though is the best way. It is equivalent to child care. Many parents just keep ignoring the body from days to weeks to months to years and wait till burnout happens. But, it’s rather important to take care of yourself as much you take care of your body.

Take mini Breaks – Try out weekend breaks. Give yourself some me time. Go for a walk, listen to music, read a few books or indulge in to any of your favorite hobby. It’s all about spending time with yourself. Some people love spending time with family too. If you think that soothes you or destress you do that. Do what rejuvenates you and shuns away the tiredness.

Ask for Help – If you try to search you will definitely find help in the likes of friends and relatives, reliable enough and offering help. Many a times parents are the best possible help that’s reliable and anytime mostly. They are always happy to help and if you feel you need a little help from them to rejuvenate or refresh yourself, go ahead and just ask without hesitation.

Joint Effort – Well, it takes two to tango and hence it’s advisable to divide your responsibilities with your partner. Take turns so each one of you gets adequate rest and refreshes.

Parenting is not a one day or one year project, it is a 20 year long term project and hence, it’s important for you as a parent to be equally fit so that you can give your best when it comes to parenting.

In today’s times when parents are very much concerned about over all development and even schools offer a holistic approach, structured activities have somehow replaced unstructured or free play for children. Ask parents if their child gets to play, most of them have the excuse of no time available due to study or structured play where kids learn sports like skating, badminton, tennis and more.

Even traditional preschools and kindergartens are into more of structured activities or play and more of indoor ones that too. But a recent study carried out at San Diego State University by Jean Twenge has revealed that there has been a rise in the rates of depression and anxiety in children during the past half a decade. This is due to the lack of unstructured play as well as recreation in kids. The almost wipe away of unstructured play in schools as well as hope has led to children scoring well in exams but increasing levels of anxiety.

Free play forms and integral part of child development. It allows them to explore their own interests and develop them and decreasing social disorders or depression. So how do you use the available time for play that’s not only fun but relaxing and beneficial too? Here are few tips.

Play is Fun – Don’t treat unstructured play very seriously like you do for study or structured play even though it is important to include it in daily activities of your child. Let the time just flow by its own and allow your child to take charge of the same and have a good time playing.

Praise honestly and frequently – Children need some boosting every now and then. It’s motivates them to make new friends, play and try new things too.

Use creative toys – While playing make sure you provide a generous supply of brushes, paints, crayons, clay and more to your kids so they can explore, engage and have a great time.

Do not pressurize - Forcing children in situations they aren’t comfortable with is not a good idea so while into play just let them be and supervise them.

Music and play – Music inspires your imaginative and creative thinking so when playing you might as well play the favorite album of children or let them decide what they want to play.

Many of the parents today are very much concerned about their children development. One reason being that these days parents have only one or maximum two children and because mostly both work they aren’t really able to spend much time with children. Hence, out of love and guilt to an extent they want to do the best they can otherwise. So, many parents pamper their children a lot and rarely involve them into household chores. But, involving your kids into household chores that they can manage is apparently a good idea.

Here are a few reasons why involving kids in household chores is definitely useful in their overall development.

Team Spirit – When you involve kids in household work they learn team work.

Responsibility – By giving them a task they become responsible for the task and see to it that it’s completed. It also makes them competent.

Satisfaction – The satisfaction they get on completion of a task assigned to them actually motivates them to do household chores with interest over a period of time.

Stress bust – Working together with your family is fun and a stress buster too. It’s a time to bond together also

Finish fast – When household chores are done together they get done faster and that time could be utilized for doing fun activities together

Caring – Involving your child into house hold chores is about training him indirectly into caring for their family

Well, an older child can definitely choose his or her own tasks. But, motivation from your end is imperative so that the child is eager or interested to get involved in household chores. You may talk to your about the chores they ‘d like to do and also the why it is great when a particular task assigned to them is done. So, make a weekly plan and ask your child for his her choices and when done praise them or give them small rewards like extra playtime or so.

Grassroots is where we need to put maximum effort so that our child is ready for the adult life. It’s the time we need to work the most so that your child can grow up and manage himself/ herself in the best possible way. Consider it as once in a lifetime opportunity. Hence, you need to make optimum benefit out of it.

As parent we need to ensure that everything about that food, their habits, their growth and behavior is on track right from the beginning of their life. Well, as far as growth is concerned after 1 year of birth the growth slows down. So, we need to ensure that the child gets proper nutrition in form of breast milk mostly in the first year.

Even the 70% of child’s brain development happens in the first five years and of those the first three are the most critical. These years have the maximum impact of how the child’s life shapes out to be around learning, social and emotional abilities too. Children learn the fastest during their early years and the development is faster if they are given love, care and attention as much as possible.

Every child has a right to grow in an environment that is out of harm’s way and is filled with love with access to nutrition, education, play and health all the way. It is also the responsibility of parents, the community as well as the government to do what it takes to ensure that the child’s fundamental rights are preserved. As per experts if a child is tended by parents who are attuned and good enough, 30% of the times the child develops secure attachment, that helps him or her provide the resilience to face the challenges of life.

So, it is extremely crucial to pay adequate attention to your children in their early years, it’s like creating their roadmap to a happy and content life.

Present-day, technology is penetrated through every single strata of India right from the low income levels to the high income groups. Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives and we cannot shy away from the fact that children are exposed to the most. Be it games or music, children do use parents mobile phones and keeping children away from gadgets is one of the major challenges parents are facing today. Even parents look for solutions to their children’s needs on the internet. There are many apps already available online to help people around parenting be it before or after the birth of the child. A few examples of apps including pregnancy care, baby growth monitoring, sleep tracking apps and more. Furthermore, there are brands who are already in the process of a making child possessions like Prams and mobiles into smart devices. Hence, we could aptly say that technology has influenced education to a great extent. Now, the question is how can we leverage technology and make it a win-win situation for parents and kids as well. Mr Jairaj Bhattacharya, MD ConvenGenius says “ Parents are choosing to provide digital devices to children. This is because children are exposed to gadgets like smartphones for entertainment and games anyways. If these gadgets could further learning outcomes and improve them psychologically, it serves as a win-win for the parent and the child. Also this serves as a great approach to fill the gaps that working parents face today due to lack of time towards their study.”

So, apps that educate children can really work well. There are already a few there that include apps connect Parents, Teachers as well as students on one common platform. Then there are one on one tutoring apps also already there for tutoring the child while there’s a facility for the parent to monitor progress of the child as well. Apps like appystore.in objective is to provide quality content for kids of different age groups right form 1.5 years to 8 years.

Having said that, continuous exposure to smart phones is not a good idea anyways. Smartphones of parents could have other content not suitable for children plus their eyes could be at risk as well. Tablet manufacturers have already taken this problem into account and have created tablets exclusively for kids with hard cases for resisting a few bumps as well like Eddy tablet by Intel. It’s a treasure trove for over 100 books referred by Educators and over 160 applications for children. Another innovative initiative is toys on rent initiative. No parent would disagree when we say a child cannot play with the same toy for long and does not have the interest to keep it safe for a long time. Rent a toy is the only easy way out to this problem. You can rent toys for your child and return them once the child is done playing. The toys available are sanitized for the safety and hygiene of children and come with amazing rental plans as well. Many of us are already aware of tools like video baby monitor that help parents monitor their baby remotely day and night.

Well, technology could be a boon only if it is used for the betterment and development of your child smartly. Though, it could never be a substitute for the time parents provide to their child or spend with them. So, using smart apps as well as technology for the betterment of your child is okay but balancing the same by spending quality time with your child is of utmost importance and no gadget or app in the world can ever be a substitute for the same.

Imagine a life where you aren’t able to express yourself through words. Not easy to imagine, right? The fact though is that many children in India and across the world are known to suffer from hearing loss.

Imagine a life where you aren’t able to express yourself through words. Not easy to imagine, right? The fact though is that many children in India and across the world are known to suffer from hearing loss. As per statistics in India, over 63 million people in India are deaf and it is known to be the second most common cause of disability in India. Furthermore, education of the children suffering from auditory loss is a concern because for every 20 lakh deaf children on 25-300 interpreters are available. While communication is a difficulty for people with hearing loss, it makes it all the more overwhelming for kids because they want to communicate so much and aren’t able to do so.

Having a child with auditory loss is again disastrous news for parents when every parent longs to hear their child call them dad or mom. The ideal solution is to observe and go for expert advice. An early diagnosis could go a long way in helping your child deal with this disability. Hearing aids are the preliminary solutions that could help your child drastically. Other hearing loss treatments for children include cochlear implants that help in development of the language and speech of the child of hearing aids are not so helpful.

Benefits of Early Intervention

Early intervention works well with children having auditory loss issues. If parents follow certain guidelines while communication with their children, this could work wonders for your child in the later years.

Make eye contact while talking to your child. If you are not making eye contact, are looking down or doing something else like reading a newspaper then it could be difficult for the child.

Keep a distance of around 1-5 meters from your child and face your child. This way your child can see you and read your lips and understand your expressions.

Do not talk to your child while chewing or eating. This could confuse your child as he or she would not be able to ready the lips and even the pronunciation could be different for a child wearing hearing aids.

Do not let other sounds interfere with your talk when communicating with your child. So, switch off background stuff like TV, music systems, etc., because it would definitely confuse your child.

Lastly but most importantly, because your child can’t hear doesn’t mean you shout into them. Talk softly and clearly so they can read you to understand. Shouting wouldn’t be of any use. If your child is facing difficulty understanding, try rephrasing your sentence.

Well, it is difficult to parent a child with auditory loss but if you begin early on and follow the guidelines given above, you should be able to make a notable difference in the life as far as communication is concerned.
