Present-day, technology is penetrated through every single strata of India right from the low income levels to the high income groups. Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives and we cannot shy away from the fact that children are exposed to the most. Be it games or music, children do use parents mobile phones and keeping children away from gadgets is one of the major challenges parents are facing today. Even parents look for solutions to their children’s needs on the internet. There are many apps already available online to help people around parenting be it before or after the birth of the child. A few examples of apps including pregnancy care, baby growth monitoring, sleep tracking apps and more. Furthermore, there are brands who are already in the process of a making child possessions like Prams and mobiles into smart devices. Hence, we could aptly say that technology has influenced education to a great extent. Now, the question is how can we leverage technology and make it a win-win situation for parents and kids as well. Mr Jairaj Bhattacharya, MD ConvenGenius says “ Parents are choosing to provide digital devices to children. This is because children are exposed to gadgets like smartphones for entertainment and games anyways. If these gadgets could further learning outcomes and improve them psychologically, it serves as a win-win for the parent and the child. Also this serves as a great approach to fill the gaps that working parents face today due to lack of time towards their study.”

So, apps that educate children can really work well. There are already a few there that include apps connect Parents, Teachers as well as students on one common platform. Then there are one on one tutoring apps also already there for tutoring the child while there’s a facility for the parent to monitor progress of the child as well. Apps like appystore.in objective is to provide quality content for kids of different age groups right form 1.5 years to 8 years.

Having said that, continuous exposure to smart phones is not a good idea anyways. Smartphones of parents could have other content not suitable for children plus their eyes could be at risk as well. Tablet manufacturers have already taken this problem into account and have created tablets exclusively for kids with hard cases for resisting a few bumps as well like Eddy tablet by Intel. It’s a treasure trove for over 100 books referred by Educators and over 160 applications for children. Another innovative initiative is toys on rent initiative. No parent would disagree when we say a child cannot play with the same toy for long and does not have the interest to keep it safe for a long time. Rent a toy is the only easy way out to this problem. You can rent toys for your child and return them once the child is done playing. The toys available are sanitized for the safety and hygiene of children and come with amazing rental plans as well. Many of us are already aware of tools like video baby monitor that help parents monitor their baby remotely day and night.

Well, technology could be a boon only if it is used for the betterment and development of your child smartly. Though, it could never be a substitute for the time parents provide to their child or spend with them. So, using smart apps as well as technology for the betterment of your child is okay but balancing the same by spending quality time with your child is of utmost importance and no gadget or app in the world can ever be a substitute for the same.

Children with special needs, require special attention and extra support as compared to their peers. Additionally, kids, as well as parents, need to deal with the surrounding, adjust and adapt to it. Even people and peers of kids with special needs don’t necessarily understand them and can be non-empathetic to them. At times many kids with special needs are disobedient and hard to manage. Here are a few tips that could help you manage your teen kids in a better way.

Believe – Believing is primary. If you believe in your kids, others automatically will. If you don’t, don’t expect others to. Your child could be angry or disobedient but you need to believe that your kid is doing his/her best.

Don’t assume – If you have any questions ask them, but do not assume. Assumptions around the special needs of your child. If your child has a physical disability do not assume that it means that the child has mental too.

Promote Independence – Don’t assume that kids with special needs are unable to make decisions without help. As far as possible let them be on their own wherever they can. Ask if they need help before helping them out with daily chores. Guide them in being independent. Like for example when you put clothes on them, ask them which shirt they would prefer to wear, by giving them small options. This way you help them make their own decisions.

Foster their Strengths – Every child is unique and even children with special needs have their own strengths. As a parent try to recognize their strengths and foster them as you would do for a normal child.

All Friendships – Encourage your child to have friendships with everyone irrespective of whether their friends are challenged or not. Just take care that other friends treat your child properly and not poorly.

Well, managing teens without disabilities can be a daunting task, then obviously, parenting teens with special needs can be even more taxing, but with a few tips and points in mind, you can make the work easier.

Cell phones have become an integral part of our lives, and we cannot deny this fact or even ignore it. Children just like adults are becoming slaves to these little gadgets. There’s been a lot of debate on whether kids should be given cells phones or not. Obviously, considering the tender age and the exposure a cell phone can give to your child, it is a matter of concern. While there are parents who want their kids to carry cell phones only for security concerns, there’s the flip side to it which does matter a lot. So, how do we decide whether we should be giving cell phones to our children or not. Apparently, parents who consider to give cell phones to their children at the age of 8 -10 years, have to keep a few points in mind. Here’s a run through some of the points to consider, so as to ensure safe and responsible handling of cell phone.

Avoid giving your child a smart phone if your objective is safety of the child only.

If you provide a cell phone set limitations for the use of it.

Ensure that your kid cannot download any games or obscene content

Be aware of the passwords they set

Take away the phone once the child is at home, if not at least 1 hour before bedtime

Understand that your child will observe you and learn, so be a good role model

Lock the sites that have adult content

Talk to your children about it

Set limits with the usage of screen

Monitor their usage by using apps that help

Try to understand your child and his/her cognitive capabilities. Consider the maturity levels of the child and then come to a conclusion on – if it would be a good idea to give the cell phone to your child at that age. There are children with ADHD behaviors who aren’t able to handle cell phones with responsibility. You may decide on the basis of your own experiences with the child and the responsibility.

There are some plants that do the same without support. Children with special needs simply need support and cooperation from the teachers, psychologists, special educators as well as therapists to help them bloom to the fullest. As simple as that.

Present day, nuclear families and working parents is a common picture when you look around. Parents are also more concerned about their children and inspite of their busy schedules and time unavailability they want to give their children the best. Though, many parents aren’t really aware about what could be the ideal breakfast for their kids. Due to hectic time schedules people do prefer bread, cereals and many ready-made or instant recipes for kids. But, are they really as healthy as they claim to be. Fitness expert ‘Rujuta Divekar’ has a slightly different take on breakfast for kids. Through her book ‘notes for healthy kids’ and their parents, she explains how ancient or traditional Indian breakfast is far more healthy compared to the instant breakfast. Here’s a run-down a few tips around healthy breakfast for kids.

Avoid Packaged Food – Primarily, the food that is free from any kind of preservatives as in packaged food needs to be avoided altogether even if it is cereals, bread or juice. Packaged stuff is loaded with preservatives and high on sugar as well as emulsifiers, to name a few. Infact, they do more harm to health than benefit.

Eat Homely Food – India has a rich and varied tradition when it comes to food. Recipes like Upma, Poha, Dosa, Idli, Paratha, Thepla, Khakra are known to be one of the most-healthy options if prepared at home. Breakfast being the most important meal of the day needs to be filling because it helps you work throughout the day and stay energized. These foods do just that against packaged foods. You may add fresh thoroughly washed fruits and dry fruits alongside milk if you’re in a hurry burry rather than opting for packaged food like bread, cereals, etc.

Avoid Plastic – From plastic food containers to plastics, sliver foil wrapping and water bottles, cutlery we use plastic everywhere. Plastic and aluminum foils are quite harmful to health. In the ancient times Indian used metals like silver, copper, bronze, brass for eating. Apparently, that’s the way it should be. Using metal containers and thalis apparently helps in protection of food against bacterial and viral infections. The alternative cost effective solution is glass if silver ware or other metal is expensive to get.

Gadget Free eating time – When you eat food you need to concentrate a bit on it. You need to feel the flavors to savor it and ultimately to understand your actual food requirement as well. When we are hooked to television or gadget, we go on hogging and never really understand how much food we need or would be enough. You can definitely get an answer to your requirement if you concentrate on food. There is a hormone in stomach called leptin, responsible for sending a signal to stomach once the stomach is full. But, to catch the signal you need to be attentive.

Eat together – Last but not the least, adding a dash of love makes food tastier isn’t it. So, top your food with love and see how it works positively with the health of your member. Make it a point to have atleast one meal together with family even if you have a packed schedule. Find out that quality time and enjoy food together with your family.

The Karnataka Department of Primary and Secondary education has released a circular stating strict action against those schools who violate this order by canceling their affiliation. The circular states “For students of Class 1 and 2, no homework should be given. Schools must only provide textbooks prescribed by the NCERT for Classes 1 to 5. If any schools found violating these, then the affiliation of such schools will be at risk”. The circular was issued because the Karnataka Department of Primary and Secondary Education is suspicious that many schools are already violating the rule and hence has issued the circular in order to curb this violation.

The reason that the board is suspicious about violation is that when the first order was issued regarding not giving homework to grade I and grade II students, there was no mention of affiliation being at risk in case of violation or any other penalty. Hence, the chances of violation were more and had come to the notice of the Karnataka board as well. The department has also undertaken the task of keeping a check with the help of special vigilance teams, for monitoring the schools and carrying out random surprise checks on schools.

The department official also mentioned that there was a reason why the decision of not giving homework to students of government schools was taken. Primarily, the parents of these children have no time to spare and tend to their children’s studies. Secondly, the idea was to also focus on extra-curricular activities which children can indulge when home. Play is as much important as is education, which can be done in school for kids of Grade I and Grade II. The department had also issued another order for Grade I and Grade II earlier wherein, every third Saturday had to be declared as ‘no bag’ day and the books issued to children not exceed 100 pages.

The authorities also mentioned that they did receive complaints from parents about violation of the orders issued and hence, the decision to attach affiliation cancelation penalty to schools.

Well, this decision does sound good as academics is not the only way as far as development of kids is concerned, a holistic approach is a better way for sure as it looks into the overall development of children and not just academics.

With the changing times, the society has changed and more and more women are working hand in hand with the male member of the family. While career is at the forefront for men and women both, it is the women who mostly have to choose between a career and the family even today.

Stay at home mom or working mom? Who is better – This is a never ending debate and every-one has a different say when it comes to what works better for the family. There are many who feel working moms can raise their children better and then there are those who feel stay at home moms raise their children better.

Studies have shown some working women feeling guilty of not being able to give time to their kids due to work priorities. These are women who were raised by stay at home moms and have had experienced good upbringing. Then, there are women who were raised by working mothers and had their share of experiences of living without the mother around throughout the day. Many of them hated being looked after by outsiders while those looked after by an elderly family member like grand-parents had lesser complaints. On the flip side there are women who were raised by working women and are themselves alright working as well. Furthermore, there are stay at home moms, who want their daughters to grow up and pursue their dreams rather than staying at home. Everyone has their own reasons based on their experiences around what is better for good upbringing of kids.

While stay at home mom is definitely able to give more time to the kids, these days even working women get a chance to balance out their home and work because companies are offering more flexibility to women at work which includes maternity leave and work from home facilities. This ways women can raising your kids while being independent and pursuing your dreams. You can also contribute to the income of the household, thus raising the living standards and supporting your family financially.

There is no good or bad, or right or wrong when it comes to making a choice between staying at home because there are a lot of factors that govern these choices besides individual freedom and thinking. It’s your choice whether you want to be there all the time for your kids or you want to work in a flexible working environment which offers sufficient work life balance, enough to give your kids the time they need and deserve.

Amidst independence struggle, freedom fighters use to create patriotic songs as an inspiration to the compatriots. Throughout the history, there are evidence for songs and music playing a very important role in any strike or revolution to restore morality, order and justice in the country. Every meaningful movement will have music and songs in its background for a support. Vydehi School of Excellence, in the spirit of Independence Day, organized a Patriotic Singing Competition for children on August 29, 2013. Three teachers organized the program where children made an awesome display of their unique talent. The event was very well received and got high acclaim from children and their parents. We consider this positive feedback as a success of this program.

Freedom is a state of mind that lets you express your thoughts without fearing any individual or any other entity in an irrational manner. When it comes to political space, freedom is an essential aspect for any country to be sovereign. Each and every individual has their own customized definition for freedom. Without freedom, an individual won’t be able to make use of his/her absolute potential to the highest of levels and hence it will be impossible for him/her to accomplish great missions in life. Every one of us needs freedom because it makes us live naturally and earn a life we rightfully deserve. India, our country, has a glorious past with rich tradition and culture and we had great natural resources. But misfortune dawned on the country when it was invaded by foreign rulers. As a direct effect, rich resources of the country were looted, without showing the slightest hint of mercy. But Indians woke up, from the initial hang over and glitter of British rule and found out that it is essential to free our mother land from the invaders and thus sacrificed their lives for our country. The freedom we enjoy today is the result of their sacrifice and hardships, fuelled by patriotism.
