Even though diarrhea is common in infants and toddlers and viral, bacterial or parasites could the reasons. But, if your child gets diarrhea during winters one of the most common virus causing this condition could be Rota virus. Some of the symptoms of diarrhea in winter include vomiting, water stools and increased need to drink water.

The cause of diarrhea due to Rota virus is due to the use of contaminated food or water. This could in-turn lead to dehydration and and electrolyte imbalance. If care is not taken it could lead to life threatening conditions like kidney injury or renal failure. This Rota Virus caused diarrhea is also known as stomach flu.

Antibiotics are not available for viral diarrhea and hence if the dehydration is more, hospitalization becomes necessary and immediate. Zinc syrup can help reduce the frequency of viral diarrhoea as well as further attack. Here are few tips on stomach flu and dealing with diarrhea.

Hydration – The primary step is to keep your child hydrated continuously by feeding water, milk or ORS which is a concoction of water, sugar and salt. If your child takes fruit juices or soup, go enough. Medicine do not work for diarrhea so do not use without consultation of your doctor.

Diet – Keeping feeding the child regular diet you do but just divide them in smaller meals. Also add some salty foods like soup and pretzels. Foods like Baked poultry, cooked eggs, bananas, bread and pasta, cereals, cooked vegetables, rice, etc is a good idea. Just that when giving milk use low fat milk as it is easy to digest.

Avoid – Avoid giving them fried foods, processed or fast foods, caffeine and carbonated drinks.

To prevent diarrhoea make it a habit in your child and adults to make hand washing a habit and vaccinate your kid also. Proper oral hygiene as well and keep your kids warm across the winter.

Diwali is one of the most celebrated and significant festivals in India. Diwali is a festival of lights and everyone right from kids to the elderly await it all year long. Crackers are also an integral part of Diwali celebrations and kids especially are very eager and fond of them. But, accidents are also a common with children around Diwali. The happiness on faces turns into sadness when such incidences occur. But, these can be avoided by taking few precautionary measures. Here’s run down few tips on avoiding accidents this Diwali and making it a happy one for one and all –

Quality – Quality of crackers is of utmost importance. See to that so that you ensure safety of your kids at the preliminary level.

Clothes – Wearing cotton clothes is recommended while bursting crackers. Though Diwali is all about wearing new and silk clothes in particular, while lighting the crackers keep it cotton.

Less Noise – Noisy crackers like Bombs not only cause noise pollution, air pollution and disturbance for animals but could be unsafe for children too.

Shoes – Many children light crackers and throw crackers like sparklers here and there. At times children get burnt because they light crackers bare footed. So, children have to wear shoes so their feet are intact and safe from burns.

First aid – Always keep water and first aid handy so that in case of any mishap, quick action could be taken and further damage could be avoided.

Measures – Never light diyas in areas near to upholstery of the house or any fabric. Keep fire crackers safely and away from diyas in order to avoid any kind of mishap.

Supervision – For children supervision is most important. The risk of accidents is increased by multifold if left on their own. So, ensure that your children are lighting up cracker under adult supervision come what may.

Though, even after all the precautions, accidents can occur but taking all the precautions needed makes it a very rare occurrence.

We all have been seeing the construction workers slogging their day out to earn the daily wage that helps them have a meal of the day. We have also seen how the kids of these construction workers are left around by them at the construction sites while they work without much of a supervision or developmental facility.

These kids grow up without educational or recreational facilities that help them grow but there’s this novel idea that government of Karnataka is going to implement and could be a step in the right direction because there is a huge chunk of construction workers and anyone would not deny that the condition in which these kids grow up is far from safe, secure or anything around the lines.

Here’s how an idea about converting old and worn out buses into creches for kids of construction workers in Bengaluru is a ray of hope for construction worker kids. The government of Karnataka, has taken up an initiative that has never before thought off. The idea is to turn the old and broken down buses into mobile creches. The creches will have toys and books for children so that they can play, explore and learn. Bengaluru government is going to make use of the KSRTC and BMTC buses that are discarded, transform them into new and colorful places to have fun. These buses will then be handed over to NGO’s for kids so that they can run them around the city and helps these kids.

Furthermore, the creche’s will also include snacks for children and would be stationed near construction sites so that the parents can drop the kids to play. Presently, the Chief Secretary has already approved for conversion of 100 buses into Creche’s in Bengaluru.

The idea seems novel and if it is implemented to perfection it is surely to be a boon to these kids. Worth applause for sure.

Gone are the days when kids used be taken care of any of the family members of a joint family and parents particularly moms were busy cooking for the whole house and other chores. But in today’s times when families have gone nuclear and parents, mostly both of them working, are very much concerned about every need of their child. They do seem to be focused in getting them everything that is needed more so because of the lack of time they have to spend with their kids. But, one thing that has not completely wiped out of still from our society is that academics is still the most important part of a child’s life. If the child fails there then there is pressure of performance. This obsession is apparently a legacy that has been carried forwards since the beginning of time of education. The winds of change are blowing but still we have to see a complete change in the mindset.

Speak to many school heads and many of them will bring this issue to light. Rather than concentrating merely on academics, parents need to understand that every child is unique and is blessed with a unique capability. As the saying goes ‘never judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree’, parents need to understand and explore the hidden talent of the child and try to nurture and foster the same rather than pressuring the child over academic performance. Parenting is a roller coaster ride with its highs and lows and bonding with children, working together with the teachers at school and parent can certainly help.

What kid really need to sustain in this world where Newton’s law ‘Survival of the fittest’ still holds true is a support that someone is always with them in their journey and who else than a parent can fill this space. Here are few tips on how you can foster your child to become independent through life skills.

Teach them to Respect people – To earn respect, you need to give respect and this needs to be instilled into the child early on. Etiquettes helps groom a child’s mentality and the way to do it is to do it yourself.

Encourage Extra-curricular activities – A holistic approach and an open mind can work wonders for the child, so beyond academics join them with extra curricular activities like sports, music or anything else that interests them.

Put them in Situations and observe then respond – Put them into situations without helping them. Try to observe how they respond to situations. This will help them make decisions, boost their self esteem

Relax and Have fun – Don’t take everything seriously. Children do make mistakes and will keep making them as they are learning every moment. So, just try to ignore silly mistakes and give them freedom to do mistakes by assuring them that we all make mistakes when we try. It’s okay to make mistakes some times as long as you learn from them and avoid repeating them.

Follow a hobby - Hobbies always help in unwinding yourself and rejuvenating and starting early always helps.

All this helps them through their journey of life when they grow up, making it easier too.

The Karnataka Department of Primary and Secondary education has released a circular stating strict action against those schools who violate this order by canceling their affiliation. The circular states “For students of Class 1 and 2, no homework should be given. Schools must only provide textbooks prescribed by the NCERT for Classes 1 to 5. If any schools found violating these, then the affiliation of such schools will be at risk”. The circular was issued because the Karnataka Department of Primary and Secondary Education is suspicious that many schools are already violating the rule and hence has issued the circular in order to curb this violation.

The reason that the board is suspicious about violation is that when the first order was issued regarding not giving homework to grade I and grade II students, there was no mention of affiliation being at risk in case of violation or any other penalty. Hence, the chances of violation were more and had come to the notice of the Karnataka board as well. The department has also undertaken the task of keeping a check with the help of special vigilance teams, for monitoring the schools and carrying out random surprise checks on schools.

The department official also mentioned that there was a reason why the decision of not giving homework to students of government schools was taken. Primarily, the parents of these children have no time to spare and tend to their children’s studies. Secondly, the idea was to also focus on extra-curricular activities which children can indulge when home. Play is as much important as is education, which can be done in school for kids of Grade I and Grade II. The department had also issued another order for Grade I and Grade II earlier wherein, every third Saturday had to be declared as ‘no bag’ day and the books issued to children not exceed 100 pages.

The authorities also mentioned that they did receive complaints from parents about violation of the orders issued and hence, the decision to attach affiliation cancelation penalty to schools.

Well, this decision does sound good as academics is not the only way as far as development of kids is concerned, a holistic approach is a better way for sure as it looks into the overall development of children and not just academics.

There’s a huge difference between parenting in the earlier times may be two decades or more backwards and cut to today. Earlier parents were not very keen, interested or sometimes aware around the importance of grassroots. But, times have changed and for good. Parents are very keen on trying their best for the upbringing of their children. Again with internet on hand, searching for information around it and even school support, parents have become aware of the fact that early years are the times when they have to be on their toes and dedicate their time and energy to give their children the environment required for them to bloom fully.

Toys are an integral part of early and growing years of a child. There is a sea of choices available to choose from when it comes to toys. Here are a few point to help you out with choosing the toys that help your child not only play and explore but learn and grow as well.

Toys that Trigger – Toys that trigger your child’s imagination are a good idea. Toys like blocks, food items toys, stuffed animals, doll houses wherein you child is able to make stories and act them with the help of pretend play. Pretend play can help hone their language skills and more.

Play based Skill Development – Toys like puzzles, clay, blocks and shapes can help your child explore, create as well has think logically. These activities can help them hone their problem solving skills, hand-eye coordination, spatial relation and motor skills.

Inter-generational play Toys – As your child crosses the age of 3, try out game nights where the family sits together and plays. Go for simple ones first. Playing together as a family will not only help hone the bonding, language skills but also their skills around counting, memory and matching.

Mix and Match – Have different sorts of toys, so the child is not bored and gets to learn a lot of different things through play. With online shopping at the click of a button, you can get access to a whole world full of toys making the whole process hassle free

Toys do have the age group information printed on them, so go for age appropriate toys, toys that are able to transform play room into a place to learn while they play.

Every parent wants their child to do well in studies at school. Parents are keen on working with kids for completing their homework and projects within the stipulated deadlines. But, many times even parents get caught up in the race to complete homework, projects and get good marks.

Should homework and projects and studying for clearing exams in flying colors be the only objective of parents, or the concentration needs to be more on something that the child can live with, on something that can help your child throughout the lifetime? So, what is it that your child needs to succeed in life?

The answer to this question lies somewhere in the quote of Einstein. “If you want your children to become intelligent, read fairy tales to them. If you want your children to be more intelligent, read more fairy tales to them.”

Well, it means that reading is one activity which can help transform your child into a successful adult. You need to keep in mind that the first five to six years of life are the most important ones.

Developing an early reading habit in your child can help them in many ways not just academically but socially, neurologically, psychologically and even with linguistics. If you as a parent work with your child and read to them in their early years with expressions, it works wonders. If the child learns to read at an early age, the brain functioning and development is immense. There have been umpteen studies that have proved the importance of learning in brain development. Little ones who are put into reading early on can easily recognize words at sight faster compared to others. Here’s how reading is going to help your child.

Academics – At grass root level when you instill something in your child, it most probably stays forever as it becomes a way of life. Also during these early years, the learning is very fast and it affects academic performance later on.

Social – Reading helps your child become confident and boost up self- esteem because they will be the ones amongst the lot who will be one up against the peers because of their understanding of reading. They could end up receiving awards and recognition as well.

Psychological – A joyful reading experience at home will help a child to become independent and instill a decision-making ability as well as spark imagination and creativity. A child who reads a lot also is able to channelize energy into the right direction, thus increasing self- productivity.

Neurological – A newborn has around 200 billion neurons or active brain cells as they are called. If the child’s brain receives the right stimulation then every brain cell can sprout into 20,000 branches that are interconnected. Hence, if parents are reading, singing or talking to the child regularly, it is obviously going to play a critical role in the development of the brain cells and thus the intellectual capabilities.

Linguistic – The children who start reading early on are obviously good with their vocabulary, oral communication, spellings as well as writing capabilities. They also tend to get better and better with their scholastics. The reading skills also enhance oral communication abilities besides writing.

Well, so a better idea is to ease the pressure of doing homework from your kindergarteners or 1st graders and concentrate more on reading to them as much as possible.

Vydehi School of Excellence in Whitefield is one of the best schools in Bangalore.
