Grassroots is where we need to put maximum effort so that our child is ready for the adult life. It’s the time we need to work the most so that your child can grow up and manage himself/ herself in the best possible way. Consider it as once in a lifetime opportunity. Hence, you need to make optimum benefit out of it.

As parent we need to ensure that everything about that food, their habits, their growth and behavior is on track right from the beginning of their life. Well, as far as growth is concerned after 1 year of birth the growth slows down. So, we need to ensure that the child gets proper nutrition in form of breast milk mostly in the first year.

Even the 70% of child’s brain development happens in the first five years and of those the first three are the most critical. These years have the maximum impact of how the child’s life shapes out to be around learning, social and emotional abilities too. Children learn the fastest during their early years and the development is faster if they are given love, care and attention as much as possible.

Every child has a right to grow in an environment that is out of harm’s way and is filled with love with access to nutrition, education, play and health all the way. It is also the responsibility of parents, the community as well as the government to do what it takes to ensure that the child’s fundamental rights are preserved. As per experts if a child is tended by parents who are attuned and good enough, 30% of the times the child develops secure attachment, that helps him or her provide the resilience to face the challenges of life.

So, it is extremely crucial to pay adequate attention to your children in their early years, it’s like creating their roadmap to a happy and content life.

Gone are the days when Indians had four to five kids or even more and they just grew up in a joint family with a long list of close relatives to look after. There have been stories of women not being able to give any time to kids because most of the time went around in the kitchen and other domestic chores for the family. Today, women are out and working and equal to men, at least to say. Today parents are much concerned of every aspect of their child’s developmental process be it health or fitness, academics or sports, hobbies or extra-curricular activities or even mental health. Parents today want the best for their children. What they only miss out on looking into the details of all this is the quality time, which is of utmost importance for the kids and home-made healthy food as well. As both parents are out and working, many kids after school live in daycares and even if they are home, with all the online order facility available at the click of the button, many times its home delivery of restaurant made foods.

This apparently hampers the health of the child and deprives them of the needed nutrients that a homemade balanced diet can provide against the processed foods, loaded with unhealthy calories available outside. Apparently, kids pick every little thing from others and primarily it’s the parents. So, if the parents prefer unhealthy food, the kids are obviously going to prefer the same. Well, the solution is to follow what you preach. Eat healthy and seeing you do so, even the child will in no time.

A healthy diet includes five potions of fruits as well as vegetables on a daily basis. The balanced diet should include carbohydrates besides dairy, fats, veggies, and proteins.

It’s simple to understand if you spread it across a pyramid. At the base include the carbohydrates like cereals, pasta, rice and bread as Carbs are responsible for providing energy all through the day. Next in the pyramid are the vegetables and the fruits, followed by protein rich foods like fish, eggs, nuts, pulses and dairy like milk, cheese and yogurt. The phoenix or top of the pyramid is made up of the smallest part that is the fat and sugars including ghee, butter, oil, sweets and cakes.

The base is the largest part and subsequently decreasing as it goes up. Your child’s diet also needs to be that way in order for him/her to get the balance of all the nutrients required to be in the best of health.

We as parents are already aware of the importance of sleep for kids. Having said that, one problem that most parents usually have to face is sleep disturbance issues and sleep cycle issues of kids. The matter of concern here is that if these issues persist then it does affect their functioning socially as well as academically due to fatigue issues.

A research carried out on school going children in the age group of 6 to 7 years in Australia include over 4500 children came to the conclusion that 22.5 percent of them had sleep issues. A pediatrician and senior research fellow at Melbourne’s Murdoch Children’s Research Institute at the Royal Children’s Hospital said that they were apparently surprised with the study because all the while they thought only baby sleep was a an issue.

These results further gave way to randomized controlled trial in 108 children of the first year school. Based on the results the Doctors said that in order improve the sleep habits it’s advisable to parents that they set a definite sleep routine for their kids. He also highlighted the fact that the major issue definitely was the screen time. Hence, the first step to improve your child’s sleep routines is to take away the screens from the bedrooms. Even if Parents themselves aren’t able to keep the screens away, trying to get children away from screen before sleep time is necessary.

As per one of the associate professors of McGill University, sleep is a very important part of daily life of kids. When at school they have to be attentive in class and follow whatever instructions have been given to them. So, inadequate sleep does affect many different aspects of their academic performance. A study of 7-11 year olds sleep behavior also indicated that an hour less and change in sleep patterns did affect the adversely with respect to their alertness levels as well as their emotional regulation. While, with an hour of more sleep for five days, the results were positive.

Hence, managing proper sleep routines and maintaining those with children is always advisable and it’s the parents who need to take keen interest and set the routines for the children and work towards maintaining them as well.

Many of you might be facing this problem of your preschoolers, toddlers and 5-6 years old spitting around. This is not only embarrassing for the parents but disgusting or kids or elders they do to. This problem is a result of lot many factors. Let us discuss about the reasons and the tips on discipline kids with their spitting habits.

Why to kids Spit?
This is one curious question that parent of every kids that spits want to know. Again, the fact is that there is no one single reason behind a kid spitting. Some spit for fun as they feel it’s entertaining for them and they feel it’s the same for others around as well. Some toddlers want to garner attention in some way or the other and hence spit to get it. It could be attention or reaction, either way. Some kids use it as a self defense tactic. When they don’t want any other child to touch their stuff or use it, they spit in self defense. Kids who are older are known to spit to show their defiance about something. It’s a tactic they use to tell others not to control them. On a more serious instance, children with autism or special needs do spit as well. It is their method to gain control or express themselves across.

How to manage spitting issues of Children?
Be calm and composed – It’s obvious to get angry when you see your child spitting on others of even you. But, your child picks up what he sees in your behavior, so the more calm you stay the better. If it’s too much to take, simply walk away or out of the room. But, showing anger or cursing is not a good idea as the child can pick up the same habit.
Clear on unacceptability around Spitting – Make it crystal clear for the child that a habit or action like spitting is not acceptable at all. No need to give a lengthy lecture, you may keep it short but clear.

Ask the child to clean his spit – This idea could be quite helpful in reducing the habit because the child knows that if he or she spits, they’ll have to clean or wash it off. So, just to avoid that extra work they might have to do, it might just work.
Give your child a timeout – Timeouts do work on some and not on some others but if your child knows about time out then it would work in that case. Giving a time out helps children calm themselves down.

Rebate system – This system could help as well. For example if your kid spits on another kid ask your kid to lend their toy to that kid for a day.
Guide your child – You can help your child out with anger management and how to use words over spitting. Gradually your child will learn to manage his or her anger and calm self down.

Reward System – A reward system usually works. So, If you find that your this methodology could be used with your child. Keep a behavior chart for your child and keep it creative with stickers and stars and smileys a stuff. When your child abides by it, praise him or her and encourage. This can help the child get rid of the spitting habit.

A statistical study of teenagers says that one in five teenagers is bound to undergo depression during his/her teenage times. Well, teenage is a time of life when you are at the peak of your youth and a lot of changes are happening within you physically as well as mentally. One issue which most parents face is a sort of disconnect between the child and them. This could be due to the age difference or bonding issues. Sometimes the child looks absolutely normal but the inside story could be very different. The child might be experiencing depression and pain. Hence, it is important for parents to keep a connect with their child and observe the child closely to find out if their child is actually well or not.

How to figure out whether the child is depressed, is a common question for parents. Here are few tips to help you know whether your child is caught in the depression trap.

Self Esteem Issues– Children suffering from depression might experience intense feelings of unworthiness, ugliness, shame, and failure.

Internet/ Phone Addiction – To distract themselves from depression, children may stay online extensively or may be addicted to mobile phone games. But they themselves aren’t aware that in fact, this addiction could further lead to isolation.

Unacceptable Behavior – Children with depression might exhibit reckless behavior like speeding, unsafe sex, excessive drinking, but to name a few.

Issues at School – Depression can lead to issues like poor attendance in school, feeling aloof, frustration with school-related work, drop in grades and more.

Violence – This issue is more rampant in boys suffering from depression. They turn aggressive, violent and self-harm themselves, besides showing disorders around eating.

Here are a few more symptoms that are common among depressed teens -
1. Feeling sad or hopeless
2. Feeling angry, irritated and hostile
3. Frequent crying
4. Poor performance at school
5. Lack of interest, motivation or enthusiasm
6. Fatigue or low on energy
7. Issues with concentration
8. Detachment from family and friends
9. Aches and pain that cannot be explained
10. Suicidal thoughts

Warning around Suicide

Google search history showing searches around suicide, death, pills and weapons

Showing reckless and self-harming behavior

Speaking about death, suicide even if in a jovial way

Giving away favorite stuff

Saying goodbye to loved ones

Writing poems or stories associated to death

As a parent you observe your child for such behaviors and if you feel that the child is showing any of the alarming signs around suicide act immediately.

Avoid Water Stagnation – Try to keep your vases, planters and water coolers free from stagnant water and replace water on a regular basis. Also, avoid keeping the clothes wet and dirty. As far as possible keep the areas dry thus giving no chance to mosquitoes to breed.

Mosquito Repellent/ Nets – Additionally, applying mosquito repellants to your kids and even using non-toxic repellants at home can further help in keeping the mosquito menace away. It is advisable that you use mosquito nets while sleeping. Mosquito nets work very best in protecting your kids against mosquitos.

Stay Hydrated – Fighting with the invading virus becomes easier when your child is well hydrated. Hydration helps cleanse the system by flushing out the toxins like bacteria and germs from the body.

Eat Hot and Fresh – Eating out is a strict no in rains, particularly street food because there is a high chance of your child getting sick with typhoid or other diseases that occur due to an intake of contaminated food or water. Hence, give your child healthy home cooked food only and filtered water.

Raincoats/ Umbrella’s – Protect your kids from the rain by always keeping a rain suit or umbrella with them and ask them to wear it on during rains. Getting drenched can lead to common cold and many other health conditions. Also, it’s important to wear proper rainy shoes and skip puddles because they are a home for infectious bacteria.

Well, a few puri’s and fritters here and there is not a bad idea but eat stuff that’s made at home and enjoy the monsoons while being safe and sound.
