If you are a parent already and reading this, you need not be told about the kind of stuff parents have to deal with day in and day out. May be some parents have kids who are easier to handle but most of us have been through tough times dealing with children, their moods, tantrums or meltdowns at some point or the other. With working parents it’s even more-harder because they aren’t really able to give their time to the kids which is of utmost importance. Additionally, if you have a child with special needs, he or she deserves double the attention and effort compared to their peer. It’s definitely an uphill task and more so a roller coaster ride. But, there are few things that parents of special kids should know for sure

You are Superhuman – You are the chosen one, being given a special task by the almighty, a task to raise children with special needs. Every day you have to work with child tantrums, meltdowns, give medication and at times take your child through medical procedures. While you do all this, you have to maintain your calm, stay sane, be patient and empathetic even though at times you could lose it all and this is not really human isn’t it? Well, so consider yourself a superhero and nothing less.

Therapy the play way – Often special needs kids do require therapy. But, when you find a therapist, find one who engages the child in a way that the child feels its play and not therapy. The best therapists are known to do so, make therapy play for children. Also, even when the kid is playing it is apparently therapy because, well, play is therapy. The kid explores, plays, learns, has fun and gets better

Spend quality time – Though you might be running tight on your daily routines and the added work that comes with raising a special needs kids, you need to find time where you simply sit down, enjoy and bond with your child. Keep aside all the tasks, and snuggle for a while, play with them, go for a walk or a hike, read with them, listen to music with them and just have quality family time. This is definitely going to help them feel more secure and

Take Care of yourself – You deserve self-care because you are already doing more and you would be doing so for a long time to come. This is definitely going to take a lot of energy and hence self-care is a priority too. If you are fit can you have that extra energy to take care of your child. So, take care of yourself, have some me time, go for regular health checkups, enjoy a hobby and stay fit.

Forgive yourself – You’re already on the multitasking drive and you are bound to create mistakes even though you try to give your best shot. So, when you end up doing a mistake, feeling frustrated or bad about it is not going to work or make you feel better or help make better decisions. So, try to be a little easy on yourself and forgive yourself when the need really be.

Well, these are only a few things of the many others that parents of special needs children need to keep in mind because they are running a different race from other peer parents.

We all have been seeing the construction workers slogging their day out to earn the daily wage that helps them have a meal of the day. We have also seen how the kids of these construction workers are left around by them at the construction sites while they work without much of a supervision or developmental facility.

These kids grow up without educational or recreational facilities that help them grow but there’s this novel idea that government of Karnataka is going to implement and could be a step in the right direction because there is a huge chunk of construction workers and anyone would not deny that the condition in which these kids grow up is far from safe, secure or anything around the lines.

Here’s how an idea about converting old and worn out buses into creches for kids of construction workers in Bengaluru is a ray of hope for construction worker kids. The government of Karnataka, has taken up an initiative that has never before thought off. The idea is to turn the old and broken down buses into mobile creches. The creches will have toys and books for children so that they can play, explore and learn. Bengaluru government is going to make use of the KSRTC and BMTC buses that are discarded, transform them into new and colorful places to have fun. These buses will then be handed over to NGO’s for kids so that they can run them around the city and helps these kids.

Furthermore, the creche’s will also include snacks for children and would be stationed near construction sites so that the parents can drop the kids to play. Presently, the Chief Secretary has already approved for conversion of 100 buses into Creche’s in Bengaluru.

The idea seems novel and if it is implemented to perfection it is surely to be a boon to these kids. Worth applause for sure.

As per a new study published in Developmental Psychology, the University of Illinios, if a child has a strong bond with parents the child, even if the child has to deal with a difficult peer, they can easily adapt as they turn out to be positive and responsive playmates.

As per Nancy McElwain, a U of I professor of human development a child who has a secure attachment with parents is more responsive and comes in with positive expectations. The study involved 114 children after 32 months. The parents were asked to report their child’s developmental changes at the 33rd week with respect to social fearfulness and proneness. Further, after completion of 39 months, same gender kids were paired randomly with others and again observed for one month period over three laboratory visits.

If a child who is securely attached is paired with a child who gets angry or frustrated fast, then this child will respond with requests rather than commands during the first two week. A simple example could such behavior could be grabbing toys etc. But by the last visit, a securely attached child seems to adapt with the anger prone peer due to the controlling assertiveness by improving his/her own control levels.

The study revealed data around the child’s attachment security level with parents, how well the kids knew one another, partners tendency to be angry as well as predictability during before and after visits. As per McElwain even the temperament of the child played an important role in understanding the behavior of securely bonded children with their peers.

Having said that, she also added that it does not mean that there is any connection with difficult temperament and insecure attachment. For example even if the infant it fussy, it does not mean he or she wouldn’t develop any bond with the parent. If tried definitely the child can develop strong bonds with his parents and enjoy positive as well as close relationships with others.

Even though kids with special needs require some extra help with their overall development and some particular areas where they are challenged, their basic needs are same as that of their abled peers. This stands true even when it comes to taking summer vacations. Specially abled children also need to have their summer vacations spent doing interesting recreational and activities. These activities not only help them enjoy their time and engage but also aid their social development and skill sets. Be it creative activities or recreational activities both help your child grow in one way or the other besides them having fun while doing so. Many parents with special needs are more comfortable putting their children in group activities that are designed for children of special needs because of their concern around the safety of their children as well as because parents feel at times their kids do need help around doing certain activities and groups for specials needs children have special educators who can help the kids around with their activities. Having said this, there are parents who prefer to have their specially abledkids indulge in activities alongside their abled peers also and it’s a good idea as per experts also because an inclusive environment helps improve the communication and social skills of children in a better way. Though having them enrolled in a normal group or special group for activities may depend on individual choice, the objective is always the same, viz. engaging your children into activities that enable your kids to develop their fine motor skills, communication skills and explore what could turn out to be their passion and even their occupation for life. Summer activities like indoor sports, cooking, pottery, adventures, outdoor sports, photography and creative activities like dancing, painting, sketching, music, help them come out of their shells and explore their interests, hone their fine motor skills, social skills, communication skills and more. There is every possibility that these explorations and experiences could turn out to be life changing for many kids.

So, if you are a parent of a special abled child, make optimum use of their summer vacations by engaging them into various different group based activities that they enjoy and learn from at the same time.

ndia is already a land of many inventions be it in the field of mathematics, physics, science, culture or literature, music or sports. We all play games as kids and even adults or senior citizens for that matter but many of us are not really aware of the origins of these games or the roots of these games. Here’s are short tour into the games that actually originated or have been known to be originated in India.

Kho Kho – Played less now, but just till two decades ago, it was a common and well known Indian Game. This game is known to have been played a lot even in the ancient times particularly by the Emperors on their chariots and was known as ‘Rathera’ because of that.

Kabaddi – One of the most popular games in India now, thanks to the Pro Kabaddi league, this sport finds its origin in Tamilnadu, India and is known to be over 4000 years old with five different forms namely Amar, Circle, Goongi, Gaminee and Suranjeevii.

Chess – Known as Ashtapada in ancient India, Chess is one of the oldest games to have originated in India. During the rule of Gupta Empire it came to be known as Chaturanga and later the Persians who travelled to India named it as Shatranj. There is also a mention of a similar board game in the Indus Valley Civilization archaeological sites. No wonder, even today India is topping the world charts in chess competitions.

Ludo – Played for the first time in the 6th Century, Ludo was earlier known as Pachisi and was derived from another ancient Indian game called Chausar. Chausar has its mention in the Ramayana as well as on the carvings of Ajant and Ellora too.

Polo – Many of us aren’t aware that Polo also has originated in India though it was later propagated by the British across the world. The game find its origins in Manipur where the monarchs there played it on Elephants for recreation in 33 AD in the court of Kumpapa Cheitharon.

Well, there are many more games including Badminton, snakes and ladders, cards and more that find their roots in ancient India and its quite surprising and awe-inspiring to see that these games even today are ruling the hearts of people, even in the times of electronic gadgets, they are not wiped off completely.

Parenting is nothing less than a roller coaster ride and many a times, you’d find parents asking experts about some formula for parenting their kids perfectly. Well, as per experts there is no such formula. While today parents aren’t really able to spend a lot of time with kids due to both of them working. So, in a bid to do our best for our children many a times we end up doing helicopter parenting. Well, Experts think that children need to be on their own and not instructed or hovered by parents all the time. As per one of the known Psychologist and author of the book The Gardener and the Carpenter, Gopnik, trying to shape your kids so that they turn out to be particular type of adults is a doomed project by far. Furthermore it could also be counterproductive. Having said that she does not mean that kids don’t need looking after. They certainly do but not like it’s been done in today’s times. Most of the middle class parents, fathers and mothers alike have taken up parenting like any occupation and their main focus is results more than the over-all development and well-being of their child.

According to the psychology professor Gopnik, “leaving children alone is not a bad idea” and children are the last thing we need to be controlling. Apparently children need to stop worrying around the tiny little minutes of parenting as it does not make any different on how children turn out of be. Over parenting apparently creates a generation of kids who aren’t really independent.

Gopnik says that there isn’t any formula around parenting its just that parents need to be the gardeners for their children. Let them grow up freely not like those gardeners though who hothouse their plants – vis manipulate or force plants to grow in a greenhouse. Its just to water them adequately and provide the necessary nutrients just like a plant grows in the meadow.

India, a country that is still in its developing stage, is a home for over 27 million kids who are differently abled. Call them kids with special needs, differently abled or challenged, it only means that these kids need additional external help or support to do the same things which their peers can do without. Though, the confusion around the learning, physical or mental disabilities and slow growth as well as difficulties around managing behavior and emotions are always there. So, as a parent of a differently abled child is primarily understood that you have to put atleast two times the effort parents put for their children who are abled. Here are a few points to help you handle your child when it comes to interacting as well as education him or her.

Do not consider your child any lesser – Because the child has special needs does not mean that he or she is any lesser or inferior to other kids. The parent is the first person to understand this, forget others. This will help you work with your child with an open mind and understand them better.

Do not consider yourself different – Though you need to obviously put in more effort than other parents, it’s not that it makes you different from others. There are abled children who need more parental support as well. Every child is different requires to be handled differently.

It’s exhaustive, be ready – Child with learning disabilities require attention on a continuous basis more so form the mother. You will have to be on your toes all the time and this can get quite exhaustive. Be ready for it, cause it will definitely be a boon for the kids in the later years.

Best or Worst, Stand strong – With children you could have to go through different phases, some of them making you really happy and content while some very exhaustive and worse as well. There could be days that go by in peace and some full of tantrums and crankiness. You might see no results for long also even if you put all effort. Stay strong and believe in yourself and your child.

Enjoy every moment – It’s not about the moments lived but the life in the moments. So, even when every-day you on your toes working with your child, try to enjoy the moments you spend together and create memories that help your child throughout their lives.

The Karnataka Department of Primary and Secondary education has released a circular stating strict action against those schools who violate this order by canceling their affiliation. The circular states “For students of Class 1 and 2, no homework should be given. Schools must only provide textbooks prescribed by the NCERT for Classes 1 to 5. If any schools found violating these, then the affiliation of such schools will be at risk”. The circular was issued because the Karnataka Department of Primary and Secondary Education is suspicious that many schools are already violating the rule and hence has issued the circular in order to curb this violation.

The reason that the board is suspicious about violation is that when the first order was issued regarding not giving homework to grade I and grade II students, there was no mention of affiliation being at risk in case of violation or any other penalty. Hence, the chances of violation were more and had come to the notice of the Karnataka board as well. The department has also undertaken the task of keeping a check with the help of special vigilance teams, for monitoring the schools and carrying out random surprise checks on schools.

The department official also mentioned that there was a reason why the decision of not giving homework to students of government schools was taken. Primarily, the parents of these children have no time to spare and tend to their children’s studies. Secondly, the idea was to also focus on extra-curricular activities which children can indulge when home. Play is as much important as is education, which can be done in school for kids of Grade I and Grade II. The department had also issued another order for Grade I and Grade II earlier wherein, every third Saturday had to be declared as ‘no bag’ day and the books issued to children not exceed 100 pages.

The authorities also mentioned that they did receive complaints from parents about violation of the orders issued and hence, the decision to attach affiliation cancelation penalty to schools.

Well, this decision does sound good as academics is not the only way as far as development of kids is concerned, a holistic approach is a better way for sure as it looks into the overall development of children and not just academics.

Skin exposure to UV rays can put you at the risk of skin cancer. Apparently, as per a study, the exposure of sun burn of damage caused during childhood can not only forecast the possibility of skin cancer but even increase the risk of the most dangerous one called melanoma by 80 percent in adulthood. Also, on an average around 60 to 80 percent of the sun exposure happens before you complete 18 years of age. Well, skin cancer can be prevented by taking care of sun exposure during childhood days. So, how do you protect your children from the sun during summer?

Protecting Infants – Babies or infants are known to have the most sensitive skin, that too under 6 months of age even more. The preliminary solution is to avoid taking infants in the sun for a long time, particularly in the afternoon. Even if you have to for some reason, take care that the infant ain’t exposed to direct sunlight by providing shade or shelter to them. You may either use a comforter to wrap around or take help of natural shade of the trees. Even UV protective tents is a good idea if you are out on a picnic or something where there is maximum possibility of exposure to sunlight.

Commuting – While commuting in a Car or on a two wheeler ensure that the toddler or child is protected from the UV rays. For protect children while in the car, you may use protective shields for the windows as the harmful UV rays can reach the child through them. Shields offering upto UPF 30 protection are available in the market already. You might as well go for them.

Toddlers and Kids – At this age, using a sun block or suns cream for protection against sun damage might not be enough. Using comfortable clothes that repel heat, sunglasses as well as caps can help the cornea safe. As per experts using sunglasses that offer 100 percent UV protection against UV rays.

Well, precaution is always better they say, and when it comes to skin cancer the study already reveals that exposure to sun in childhood does increase the risk of cancer, hence it is advisable that you take every care possible to avoid unnecessary skin exposure and damage to skin.
