Even though diarrhea is common in infants and toddlers and viral, bacterial or parasites could the reasons. But, if your child gets diarrhea during winters one of the most common virus causing this condition could be Rota virus. Some of the symptoms of diarrhea in winter include vomiting, water stools and increased need to drink water.

The cause of diarrhea due to Rota virus is due to the use of contaminated food or water. This could in-turn lead to dehydration and and electrolyte imbalance. If care is not taken it could lead to life threatening conditions like kidney injury or renal failure. This Rota Virus caused diarrhea is also known as stomach flu.

Antibiotics are not available for viral diarrhea and hence if the dehydration is more, hospitalization becomes necessary and immediate. Zinc syrup can help reduce the frequency of viral diarrhoea as well as further attack. Here are few tips on stomach flu and dealing with diarrhea.

Hydration – The primary step is to keep your child hydrated continuously by feeding water, milk or ORS which is a concoction of water, sugar and salt. If your child takes fruit juices or soup, go enough. Medicine do not work for diarrhea so do not use without consultation of your doctor.

Diet – Keeping feeding the child regular diet you do but just divide them in smaller meals. Also add some salty foods like soup and pretzels. Foods like Baked poultry, cooked eggs, bananas, bread and pasta, cereals, cooked vegetables, rice, etc is a good idea. Just that when giving milk use low fat milk as it is easy to digest.

Avoid – Avoid giving them fried foods, processed or fast foods, caffeine and carbonated drinks.

To prevent diarrhoea make it a habit in your child and adults to make hand washing a habit and vaccinate your kid also. Proper oral hygiene as well and keep your kids warm across the winter.

Parenting children is already a task, more so if your children are the super active types. The work increases by manifolds when it comes to parenting kids with special needs. The reason being the extra support that these kids need does at times take a toll on the parents. Being a parent of a special child is like on duty round the clock even on vacations or during play time. Burnout is a common issue thus amongst parents be is children with specials needs or not. It’s okay. Parents need to understand that at the end of the day they are human beings and have a body that needs rest when it needs rest.

Preventing burnout though is the best way. It is equivalent to child care. Many parents just keep ignoring the body from days to weeks to months to years and wait till burnout happens. But, it’s rather important to take care of yourself as much you take care of your body.

Take mini Breaks – Try out weekend breaks. Give yourself some me time. Go for a walk, listen to music, read a few books or indulge in to any of your favorite hobby. It’s all about spending time with yourself. Some people love spending time with family too. If you think that soothes you or destress you do that. Do what rejuvenates you and shuns away the tiredness.

Ask for Help – If you try to search you will definitely find help in the likes of friends and relatives, reliable enough and offering help. Many a times parents are the best possible help that’s reliable and anytime mostly. They are always happy to help and if you feel you need a little help from them to rejuvenate or refresh yourself, go ahead and just ask without hesitation.

Joint Effort – Well, it takes two to tango and hence it’s advisable to divide your responsibilities with your partner. Take turns so each one of you gets adequate rest and refreshes.

Parenting is not a one day or one year project, it is a 20 year long term project and hence, it’s important for you as a parent to be equally fit so that you can give your best when it comes to parenting.

Parenting trends have kept on changing and evolving over time and one of the biggest influence in parenting has been the technology that has also become an integral part of living of humankind and its positive as well as negative effects on kids. Let’s run through some of the parenting trends of 2019 that parents need to be aware about.

Holistic Approach – Even though in India academics is a top priority for parents, there has been a lot of change and parents and even schools are taking the holistic approach of concentrating not only on academic excellence but areas of interest of the child and fostering the same.

Anxiety is normal – Present-day, people are able to understand that it is okay to be anxious, it is normal. Be it adults or kids, everyone is prone to anxiety. A survey in Australia proved that one in seven kids within the age group of 4-18 years having mental health conditions, obviously anxiety is there. People and Parents are accepting this, talking about it and ways to handle the same.

The Technology Effect – Technology has transformed life and has become an integral part of everyone’s lives today. With the pro, there comes the con, that includes its effects on children in terms of over usage or addiction, abuse and more. In 2019, people and parents alike are talking about dealing with the technology cons and balancing the family time and tech time with an objective of using technology for personal enrichment, not entertainment only.

Extra-Curricular Activities – From the beginning of time, to say, academics has always topped the priority list of parents. But, now times are changing and extra-curricular activities could just turn out to be a passion for your kid, a stress buster or rejuvenator for that matter and help in the overall wellbeing as well. Parents are paying attention to extra-curricular activities as much as they do to academics.

Meaningful Conversations – The only way to establish a connection with your child, a bond and friendship is to converse. Meaningful conversations with parents can help children outgrow their anxiety, fears and more. Be it at the meal – table or while indulging into extra-curricular activities inside or outside the house or just having fun, meaningful conversations can work like magic.

With time, the only constant is change, and we need to learn to change. It applies to parenting too and the trends are a harbinger of the same. Well, that’s good news.

Gone are the days when Indians had four to five kids or even more and they just grew up in a joint family with a long list of close relatives to look after. There have been stories of women not being able to give any time to kids because most of the time went around in the kitchen and other domestic chores for the family. Today, women are out and working and equal to men, at least to say. Today parents are much concerned of every aspect of their child’s developmental process be it health or fitness, academics or sports, hobbies or extra-curricular activities or even mental health. Parents today want the best for their children. What they only miss out on looking into the details of all this is the quality time, which is of utmost importance for the kids and home-made healthy food as well. As both parents are out and working, many kids after school live in daycares and even if they are home, with all the online order facility available at the click of the button, many times its home delivery of restaurant made foods.

This apparently hampers the health of the child and deprives them of the needed nutrients that a homemade balanced diet can provide against the processed foods, loaded with unhealthy calories available outside. Apparently, kids pick every little thing from others and primarily it’s the parents. So, if the parents prefer unhealthy food, the kids are obviously going to prefer the same. Well, the solution is to follow what you preach. Eat healthy and seeing you do so, even the child will in no time.

A healthy diet includes five potions of fruits as well as vegetables on a daily basis. The balanced diet should include carbohydrates besides dairy, fats, veggies, and proteins.

It’s simple to understand if you spread it across a pyramid. At the base include the carbohydrates like cereals, pasta, rice and bread as Carbs are responsible for providing energy all through the day. Next in the pyramid are the vegetables and the fruits, followed by protein rich foods like fish, eggs, nuts, pulses and dairy like milk, cheese and yogurt. The phoenix or top of the pyramid is made up of the smallest part that is the fat and sugars including ghee, butter, oil, sweets and cakes.

The base is the largest part and subsequently decreasing as it goes up. Your child’s diet also needs to be that way in order for him/her to get the balance of all the nutrients required to be in the best of health.

A Study carried out by a team of researchers at the University of Eastern Finland, had revealed that body fat or different levels of aerobic fitness had not effect on the cognitive abilities of a child. This study was carried out on 371 children in the age group of 6-8 years of age. The study further revealed that the boys with higher aerobic fitness levels faired poorer during the two year follow program on cognition as compared to their peers with lower fitness levels. The study also showed that boys having better motor skills were have a little increase in their cognitive skills as compared to those boys who had poor motor skills.

Obese kids are as smart as their peers in areas associated with Motor competence, fitness and adiposity as well as cognition. Eero Haapla, A post-doctoral researcher from the university said that the results didn’t necessarily exhibit the casual relation between cognition and motor skills.

The study was published in the journal medicine and science in sports and exercise cognition as well as motor skills are associated with each other in boys yet the study is not enough proof to claim that motor skills boosts cognition.

Still obesity needs to be taken care of by parents, particularly child obesity. Another study around obesity has claimed that lack of sleep could be one of the reasons for childhood obesity. As per a new study from university of Warwick, the children who sleep for less than the recommended hours for children tend to become obese in the later years of their life. The study is based on meta-analysis of 75000 children from the age of 0 -18 years of age. The children who are deprived of sleep on a regular basis are 58% more likely to be obese or overweight. Attention issues are also linked with obesity hence children with ADHD also are at risk because their mind cannot be shut down instantly or easily as its buzzing continuously. Hence, sleep education to parents needs to be done in order to create the awareness around it and many associated side effects of the same.

We’ve been reading about limiting screen time for children and how important it is to do so for the development of these children during their growing up years. But, as per pediatricians the same goes for adults too. They also need to restrict themselves from being on their phones or tablets or electronic gadgets all the time when off. An off hours-time or a timeout for these gadgets is needed as per JAMA pediatrics published resource.

The primary reason behind the same is that Children always pick up stuff from their parents. They pick up what they see their parents doing, the way they speak or behave. So, if parents themselves are hooked to gadgets and tell their children to stay away from them, it does not really make a lot of sense, isn’t it? Therefore, particularly when it comes to habits related to smartphone, they very much tend to pick up this habit too.

As per a developmental behavioral pediatrician’s own research, parents who keep themselves tied up to their smartphones have very less parent- child interactions and even increased rate of conflicts with their kids. Over time they even find it difficult to manage behavior of their children.

As per her a bunch of researches she did, parents who watched more television had kids also doing the same. Also, if television was in the background on then it affected their interaction as well as play of kids negatively.

As per her and co-author of University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, parents need to give a serious thought about their relationship with their smart phone or gadgets. A good idea is rather to go for a walk when feeling stressed rather than getting hooked to the smart phone. Many of the parents to get over office stress, to avoid family interactions that are difficult or other similar reasons try to get engaged on purpose to their gadgets. So, whenever you are on phone try to keep track of the time spent be it on social media or email checking, etc.

Matter of the fact is that multitasking ain’t easy and many a times affects efficiency negatively. Same is the case with parenting say researchers. They also recommend that parents find a solution and a time when their time with their family and kids is not affected and they can do their phone related stuff as well. They need organize their time schedule and say strict no to smartphones during mealtimes, bedtime and specific time allocated for spending with family or doing certain tasks and activities together.

As per another researcher parental screen time can pose a safety issue for children as children could be left unsupervised at that time plus it could also take away the time that could be rather spent with children in a face to face chat.

In a nutshell, parents are the role models for most to the kids and keeping the point in mind, parents first need to improve their own behavior in order for children to follow.

It is very important that as a parent you spend quality as well as the quantity of time with your child. These days most of the parents are working, both of them to be more precise. So, the time available on hand is already quite less and hence it is not an easy task for a parent to find time to speak to the child or kid one on one.

Having said that, you need to know that it is a routine that needs to be kept as a top priority on your work list or checklist once you are home.

Offcourse work is a priority because it helps you buy your bread and butter but investing time in your child is particularly in their early years, (0 -5 years) is an investment worth crores of rupees. When your kids start school, the responsibilities go up. You need to spend time with your kids all the more to bond so well that they share their secrets to an extent with you. Well, if your kid is a teen, expecting to share every secret of theirs is apparently a hypothetical one

But, even though you are not bonding high time with your children, a good idea is to try and find out what they do in school on an everyday basis, more so if your child is a preschooler. Routine questions like how was your day are okay to ask but you need to go beyond that to find out more. Here’s run-down of five questions that you may ask your preschool kids after they come home from school.

Whom did you sit with today?
This is a question that will help you know about your child’s buddies. This will help you understand what type of kids your child befriends and it even helps you bond well. Children feel bored if you start a conversation around studies, but if it is around playing and their friends they would love to talk. So beginning your conversations with such questions is a good idea to engage them in a conversation. You can even go on asking about their best friends.

What did you learn at school today?
This question helps you to get a general idea of what the teacher has taught at school. You can even frame your question based on what your child does at home. For example, if you find your child singing rhymes you might as well ask him or her if the rhyme he or she was singing, was taught at school. You need not use the exact question stated above.

What did you eat for breakfast/lunch? (If the school offers breakfast and/or meals)
If your child has his or her meal, be it breakfast or lunch at school then always take time to find out what the child eats, more so how much he or she eats and if he/she likes what she eats. This can be done by asking your child questions about the food they had at school and if they liked it or not as well as how much they ate. Cross verifying the same with the teacher is required though because sometimes kids may lie.

What are the rules your class teacher talks about?
This question is a bit tricky one but still can get your child telling about the rules and regulations at school. You can also figure out if he/she really gels with the teacher or not through the way he or she answers the question. Even the expressions can help you out.

Anything funny or laughable happened at school today?
Again closing the conversation with light-hearted questions leaves a good aftertaste. So, ask your child to share some light moments that took place at school and make the child recall happy moments at school.

Talking is really important, to develop a bond with your child. So find time for your child and see how your little flower blooms with your presence around.

There were times when computers had just made an entry in a common man’s world and were extremely slow and without much of storage facility. Switch to present times and you have a computer in your pocket that is umpteen times faster than the earlier ones and with super storage capabilities, to name a few. Today, you’ll find a software for solving most of your issues and problems. This implies that we are already living in the world that is dominated by software. Such is the scenario today, imagine what’s the future going to be like?

Obviously, it’s going northwards when it comes to online or digital. Just like in the older times, we communicated using various different languages, today we communicate using software. Hence, it is critical that we teach our children the language of communication of today viz. coding.

Even though there has been such a mammoth rise in the computing world, somewhere India has ignored this growth by not including coding languages in school curriculums at an early level. It’s not that coding is something not suitable for the kids but apparently, anyone in the world can easily learn the basic skills with simple tutorials. In no time you can be ready to make your own programs and applications.

Many countries are looking into this avenue and one such country that has understood the importance of coding is Britain. It has set up organizations like Code Academy, Code Club, and Young Rewired Stage to name a few, thus helping youngsters learn coding skills.

Well, you might be wondering: is learning code, like, need of the hour because it is a crucial skill that can get you jobs in the future easily? Not that its only about getting jobs but its more about honing your ability of problem-solving and learning a new way to think. Plus, you can learn to resolve complex issues by breaking them into smaller resolvable ones. It is about computational thinking and its benefits not just in a work area but your routine life as well.

Coding has not only caught the attention of foreign countries, many in India have also felt the need to teach their children coding and one example is Tanmay Bakshi, the little one aged only 12 who has addressed IBM’s biggest ever developer meet in Bengaluru attended by over 10,000 coders. The good news is he is not the only one, India is witnessing a pool of super coders rising and in the age groups of as young as 8 -17 years. This has also motivated biggies like Microsoft, Apple and IBM go trotting for child coders.

Perhaps, the time to teach our children how to code is now and the process has already begun. It’s time that parents also take a keen interest in teaching children computational languages and making them ready for the future.

Many A times parenting can get highly stressful, particularly when you have to deal with kids with disruptive behaviour. You at times tend to give up because you feel no single way you tried is working well with your kid. Though disruptive behaviour can be a result of behavioural conditions on an average all normal children do have behavioural issues on and off. Only when the behaviour is persistent and there are symptoms of clinical issues is when a mental health specialist could be brought in to review the disorder like ADHD, anxiety or more.

Here are few tips that might just help you out in dealing with the disruptive behaviour of your child.

1. Tell what to do – We always tend to tell our children to not do something when it’s always a good idea to tell them what to do. For example if you child is jumping on the bed, you rather say, please get down dear and not stop jumping or don’t jump.

2. Respect them – Whenever talking to them respect them as you would to anyone one else of your age, respect their opinion even if you don’t abide by it or like it. Even while instructing them be respectful and calm in whatever you say and they’ll do the same.

3. Speak with Clarity – Whatever instruction you give to your child or whatever you say needs to be crystal clear. Rather and saying go and do it. Say please start doing your homework for example.

4. Don’t keep Repeating – you need to wait for the message to sink in before you repeat it so wait for a minute or so before repeating what you said. If you keep repeating, your child will assume that you would repeat it for him or her.

5. Motivation and Praising – Rewards or praising works really well with kids. So if your kid does his or her work on time, reward them some extra play time or TV time. This will act as a motivation to them.

Try to be a friend of your child but none the less teach them to be well manned and disciplined where it is needed through use of parenting strategies. Happy Parenting.

The parent-teacher association of Vydehi School of Excellence is an active body of the School. Every parent and teacher is a member of the association, as VSE strongly believes that parents and teachers must work together with children to improve the quality of education.

Most of you parents might have come across tantrums, meltdowns and mis-behaviors of your growing toddlers and would definitely agree that managing their emotions or regulating their emotions is a bump ride all together. As stressful it is for kids, it is for the parent as well. Then there are kids who would throw tantrums and meltdowns, showdowns are very regular as frequent as daily basis. Parents have their own ways of handling their kids but many of us as parents are not aware of the facts that dealing with self regulation of your child is a game of patience and self regulation first.

Well, you as a parent need to know that simply scolding, time outs and reacting ain’t going to help you find a way. Here’s how you can guide your child and help him or her with self regulation

Help them with being patient – Whenever you want to give something to the child, do not give it immediately. Help the kid get a hang of patience and know well that you do not get everything in life at jet speed and that you need to wait at times for a short or long period as well.

Involve them in decision making – Smaller decisions like selecting a dress to wear or selecting tiffin snacks can help them making a plan or a decision when in a situation. It will help hone their decision making skills. Start with two options and increase later on.

Playing games that involve controls – This is one of the fun ways to teach your child self regulation while engaging with the child in games like slow down speed up games, dance and freeze game, to name a few.

Acknowledge their self regulation issues – After all, you are dealing with kids and as difficult it is to bear, it is difficult for them to regulate themselves when upset, frustrated or angry. So, its nice to acknowledge their feelings. For example if your child is unable to wait for something are going to give them and want it instantly, you can acknowledge the child saying that you know how hard it is to wait for something and that he would get it, its just a matter of waiting some time.

Celebrate their good deeds – If they show some empathy or kindness towards others, give them a pat on their back or simply let them know that it was nice of them to do so. This will motivate them to repeat such acts.

Well, Having said that, you need to always keep it on your mind that these are just toddlers and will not robots who would be remote controlled by you. There will be times they would not listen, they would throw tantrums and more. But, if you help them like torch bearer, the will definitely learn and grow into human beings capable of regulating their emotions well.

The aim of Vydehi School of Excellence is to provide students with a positive, inclusive, learning environment in which they have every opportunity to achieve their full potential.
