If you put your children into the habit of reading bedtime stories through their infancy they are more likely to be avid readers because it’s likely to become a part of their lifestyle.

Once they are into the drill of hearing stories on a daily basis, they will want more and more. Well, that’s the magic of stories. But, while telling stories to your little ones, if you turn yourself into a story teller it surely makes a deeper connection. Just reading out a story is good but doing it with actions even better. The children feel connected and very much into the whole process. Well, additionally reading stories and that too loud comes with a lot of opportunities and benefits. Here’s run down a few of them.

Instills story reading – A daily dose of story reading can go a long way in forming a habit in your children and more so love for reading that they could carry along through their lives and never make them feel lonely.

Hones their Language skills – Reading helps in development and improvement of vocabulary and language skills. By the time they are around five to seven years, their mind is full of umpteen different words.

Helps talk on Sensitive Issues – As you get to spend more time with kids and bond with them, they tend to open up to you and it even makes way for talking on sensitive issues at school.

Bond as a Family – Reading every night to your child or children creates a culture where there’s dedicated time spend together as a family doing something. It also helps enhance and strengthen the bond.

Well, Albert Einstein has already made a point by saying “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.

Even though diarrhea is common in infants and toddlers and viral, bacterial or parasites could the reasons. But, if your child gets diarrhea during winters one of the most common virus causing this condition could be Rota virus. Some of the symptoms of diarrhea in winter include vomiting, water stools and increased need to drink water.

The cause of diarrhea due to Rota virus is due to the use of contaminated food or water. This could in-turn lead to dehydration and and electrolyte imbalance. If care is not taken it could lead to life threatening conditions like kidney injury or renal failure. This Rota Virus caused diarrhea is also known as stomach flu.

Antibiotics are not available for viral diarrhea and hence if the dehydration is more, hospitalization becomes necessary and immediate. Zinc syrup can help reduce the frequency of viral diarrhoea as well as further attack. Here are few tips on stomach flu and dealing with diarrhea.

Hydration – The primary step is to keep your child hydrated continuously by feeding water, milk or ORS which is a concoction of water, sugar and salt. If your child takes fruit juices or soup, go enough. Medicine do not work for diarrhea so do not use without consultation of your doctor.

Diet – Keeping feeding the child regular diet you do but just divide them in smaller meals. Also add some salty foods like soup and pretzels. Foods like Baked poultry, cooked eggs, bananas, bread and pasta, cereals, cooked vegetables, rice, etc is a good idea. Just that when giving milk use low fat milk as it is easy to digest.

Avoid – Avoid giving them fried foods, processed or fast foods, caffeine and carbonated drinks.

To prevent diarrhoea make it a habit in your child and adults to make hand washing a habit and vaccinate your kid also. Proper oral hygiene as well and keep your kids warm across the winter.

As per a new study published in Developmental Psychology, the University of Illinios, if a child has a strong bond with parents the child, even if the child has to deal with a difficult peer, they can easily adapt as they turn out to be positive and responsive playmates.

As per Nancy McElwain, a U of I professor of human development a child who has a secure attachment with parents is more responsive and comes in with positive expectations. The study involved 114 children after 32 months. The parents were asked to report their child’s developmental changes at the 33rd week with respect to social fearfulness and proneness. Further, after completion of 39 months, same gender kids were paired randomly with others and again observed for one month period over three laboratory visits.

If a child who is securely attached is paired with a child who gets angry or frustrated fast, then this child will respond with requests rather than commands during the first two week. A simple example could such behavior could be grabbing toys etc. But by the last visit, a securely attached child seems to adapt with the anger prone peer due to the controlling assertiveness by improving his/her own control levels.

The study revealed data around the child’s attachment security level with parents, how well the kids knew one another, partners tendency to be angry as well as predictability during before and after visits. As per McElwain even the temperament of the child played an important role in understanding the behavior of securely bonded children with their peers.

Having said that, she also added that it does not mean that there is any connection with difficult temperament and insecure attachment. For example even if the infant it fussy, it does not mean he or she wouldn’t develop any bond with the parent. If tried definitely the child can develop strong bonds with his parents and enjoy positive as well as close relationships with others.

There’s a huge difference between parenting in the earlier times may be two decades or more backwards and cut to today. Earlier parents were not very keen, interested or sometimes aware around the importance of grassroots. But, times have changed and for good. Parents are very keen on trying their best for the upbringing of their children. Again with internet on hand, searching for information around it and even school support, parents have become aware of the fact that early years are the times when they have to be on their toes and dedicate their time and energy to give their children the environment required for them to bloom fully.

Toys are an integral part of early and growing years of a child. There is a sea of choices available to choose from when it comes to toys. Here are a few point to help you out with choosing the toys that help your child not only play and explore but learn and grow as well.

Toys that Trigger – Toys that trigger your child’s imagination are a good idea. Toys like blocks, food items toys, stuffed animals, doll houses wherein you child is able to make stories and act them with the help of pretend play. Pretend play can help hone their language skills and more.

Play based Skill Development – Toys like puzzles, clay, blocks and shapes can help your child explore, create as well has think logically. These activities can help them hone their problem solving skills, hand-eye coordination, spatial relation and motor skills.

Inter-generational play Toys – As your child crosses the age of 3, try out game nights where the family sits together and plays. Go for simple ones first. Playing together as a family will not only help hone the bonding, language skills but also their skills around counting, memory and matching.

Mix and Match – Have different sorts of toys, so the child is not bored and gets to learn a lot of different things through play. With online shopping at the click of a button, you can get access to a whole world full of toys making the whole process hassle free

Toys do have the age group information printed on them, so go for age appropriate toys, toys that are able to transform play room into a place to learn while they play.
