Parenting is nothing less than a roller coaster ride and many a times, you’d find parents asking experts about some formula for parenting their kids perfectly. Well, as per experts there is no such formula. While today parents aren’t really able to spend a lot of time with kids due to both of them working. So, in a bid to do our best for our children many a times we end up doing helicopter parenting. Well, Experts think that children need to be on their own and not instructed or hovered by parents all the time. As per one of the known Psychologist and author of the book The Gardener and the Carpenter, Gopnik, trying to shape your kids so that they turn out to be particular type of adults is a doomed project by far. Furthermore it could also be counterproductive. Having said that she does not mean that kids don’t need looking after. They certainly do but not like it’s been done in today’s times. Most of the middle class parents, fathers and mothers alike have taken up parenting like any occupation and their main focus is results more than the over-all development and well-being of their child.

According to the psychology professor Gopnik, “leaving children alone is not a bad idea” and children are the last thing we need to be controlling. Apparently children need to stop worrying around the tiny little minutes of parenting as it does not make any different on how children turn out of be. Over parenting apparently creates a generation of kids who aren’t really independent.

Gopnik says that there isn’t any formula around parenting its just that parents need to be the gardeners for their children. Let them grow up freely not like those gardeners though who hothouse their plants – vis manipulate or force plants to grow in a greenhouse. Its just to water them adequately and provide the necessary nutrients just like a plant grows in the meadow.

Teaching responsibility to kids isn’t a cake walk alright, but it is yet to be inculcated at grass root level so that they grow up to become disciplined human beings and citizens. Responsibility, the word however heavy it may sound, needs to be brought forward amongst children in way that it is something that is not a burden but something that gives happiness.

So, its not really about teaching your kids to take up their responsibility but to inculcate in them the values of team work and power of contribution. If we are supportive with them, and guide them through like torch bearers, kids can turnout to be responsible. Here are a few strategies you may put into practice to get the best out of them

I clean. My mess – Before you teach it to your child to be responsible you be responsible yourself. Its like asking a child to organise the toys he or she’s thrown around alongside you yourself arranging your desk or cupboard for that reason. Further you can also help your child with the cleaning work so that you are not

Offer a helping hand – Its not about the kid doing all his or her chores out of compulsion but more about being happy in cleaning up or organizing or contributing to the family. Even if you have to help out the child around twenty thirty times do it.

Let your child take decisions in difficulty – Many of us parents rush to our kids rescue when caught in difficulty

Accountability – Its again starts at home. You make promise to your child, you need to fulfil it. If you are not responsible then don’t expect it from the child.

Motivate. Don’t label – If you see your child is not doing the drill, don’t label him or her off as an irresponsible instead motivate and mould them to be responsible, to take care of their stuff and organization skills.

No Blame Games – Get the blaming each other crap out of your house. Instead inculcate team work. Blaming is the opposite of unconditional love. Therefore takeup a responsibility and do it. Your kid is following your foot steps and would definitely catch up.

As for toddlers you can give them charge of certain decisions like choosing how much to eat, options of eating, not more than two or three. This way they get a choice to decide and do up their responsibility as well.

Having said that, it’s not child’s play to mould your kids into responsible ones and requires a lot of patience, but with dedication it is possible to do so, for sure.

“Fairness is not giving everyone the same thing,
Fairness is giving each person what they need to succeed”

These days we hear a lot about the term inclusive education. Suddenly these alien concepts are the norm in our country and everyone is talking about it.

However, believe me, it is a good thing and this topic needs all the attention it can get.
So let us begin with the classic explanation.

“Inclusive education happens when children with and without disabilities participate and learn together in the same classes. Research shows that when a child with disabilities attends classes alongside peers who do not have disabilities, good things happen”.

Roots of inclusive education can be traced back to the 1950s in USA & Canada where reputed universities experimented with integration of students with severe disabilities pioneered by inclusion teachers, who believe in participatory learning, cooperative learning, and inclusive classrooms.

In India, though we have been approaching inclusion since quite some time, we have a lot to achieve. The society has come a long way from fear, negligence, pity & sympathy towards empathy.

Our constitution provides for education as the fundamental right to all children, but until the recent Right to Education Act, introduced in 2012 schools were at liberty whether or not to grant admission to students with special needs.

Government can make laws and provide infrastructure, but it all depends on the other stakeholders (Schools, Parents, and Teachers) on how we perceive inclusive education & our willingness to take it forward. Reluctance also stems from the fact that inclusive education is a guaranteed high return long-term investment but with very high premium in the short term.

It is not only important to provide infrastructure like ramps, toilets, accessibility to laboratories, playground, etc but also to identify and support children with learning and mental disabilities. Lack of flexibility in curriculum, affordability, being bullied in the class and not getting adequate attention from the teachers are other contributing factors, which stall inclusive education.

We must all understand that “All children can learn” but “All children learn differently” & Special education is not inclusive education.

The Inclusive Education Clause in the RTE Act is an important step in the right direction. It also helps regular kids. When they attend classes that reflect the similarities and differences of people in the real world, they learn to appreciate diversity.

So let us all strive to improve the status of inclusive education within our respective spheres of influence. What begins with a sense of responsibility & compassion culminates in a feeling of pride when the children reciprocate with joy & passion that make our efforts pale in comparison.

Freedom is a state of mind that lets you express your thoughts without fearing any individual or any other entity in an irrational manner. When it comes to political space, freedom is an essential aspect for any country to be sovereign. Each and every individual has their own customized definition for freedom. Without freedom, an individual won’t be able to make use of his/her absolute potential to the highest of levels and hence it will be impossible for him/her to accomplish great missions in life. Every one of us needs freedom because it makes us live naturally and earn a life we rightfully deserve. India, our country, has a glorious past with rich tradition and culture and we had great natural resources. But misfortune dawned on the country when it was invaded by foreign rulers. As a direct effect, rich resources of the country were looted, without showing the slightest hint of mercy. But Indians woke up, from the initial hang over and glitter of British rule and found out that it is essential to free our mother land from the invaders and thus sacrificed their lives for our country. The freedom we enjoy today is the result of their sacrifice and hardships, fuelled by patriotism.

Vydehi School of Excellence celebrated the Independence Day on 14th August 2013, with the eternal favour of patriotism and instilled the importance of being a true Indian in the core, in children.VSE, this time, observed ‘Incredible India’ theme for Independence Day as the salutation to the rich heritage of this country and its real heroes. The celebration lasted almost a week.
