Parenting isn’t always a cake walk rather it is a roller coaster ride for most of us. Every growing year brings about a challenge of its own when it comes to dealing with children, their habits and tantrums as well. One such issue that most of the parents if not all come across is disrespectful or rude behavior of children. Dealing with children who do not listen, back answer or even swear at times is sometimes a task for parents. Many find it difficult to deal with such situations for better results. Here are a few tips on how to deal with kids who show disrespectful behavior and curb this from turning into a habit.

It’s time to Discipline – Off-course, you don’t have to be rude in your way to tell them. Rather than pointing out some chore they haven’t finished, tell them that they would get a chance to play outdoor as soon as they finish their chore. Now, there’s an option for your child to choose from.

Don’t Ignore – Many parents simply take everything their children do easy. They feel that with age they will themselves learn to behave well. But, parents need to

One Warning always – Always warn before taking any strict action about an issue. For example if your child is not letting you work on your laptop, warn the child that if he/she don’t allow you to work then they will get a time out. You have to do it only once and not keep repeating that because if you keep repeating and don’t take action after a warning, it would be like fuel the fire.

Instant Actions – Immediate actions are important so that children take whatever you say seriously enough. If the behavior is worth a punishment, give it immediately. This could either be a time out of a few hours of no outdoor activity for a day or two or something else. For example if you kid is calling you names or talking with you rudely, then you need to make them understand that such behavior is unacceptable and they will have to pay for it, by depriving them of their favorite privilege for some time.

Restitution – In order to avoid some disrespectful behavior of your child yet again, restitution could be one of the way out. If you child for example behaves disrespectfully with someone, doing some kind gesture to the victim in order to repair the damage already done and avoid reoccurrence is what restitution is all about.

Many of you might be facing this problem of your preschoolers, toddlers and 5-6 years old spitting around. This is not only embarrassing for the parents but disgusting or kids or elders they do to. This problem is a result of lot many factors. Let us discuss about the reasons and the tips on discipline kids with their spitting habits.

Why to kids Spit?
This is one curious question that parent of every kids that spits want to know. Again, the fact is that there is no one single reason behind a kid spitting. Some spit for fun as they feel it’s entertaining for them and they feel it’s the same for others around as well. Some toddlers want to garner attention in some way or the other and hence spit to get it. It could be attention or reaction, either way. Some kids use it as a self defense tactic. When they don’t want any other child to touch their stuff or use it, they spit in self defense. Kids who are older are known to spit to show their defiance about something. It’s a tactic they use to tell others not to control them. On a more serious instance, children with autism or special needs do spit as well. It is their method to gain control or express themselves across.

How to manage spitting issues of Children?
Be calm and composed – It’s obvious to get angry when you see your child spitting on others of even you. But, your child picks up what he sees in your behavior, so the more calm you stay the better. If it’s too much to take, simply walk away or out of the room. But, showing anger or cursing is not a good idea as the child can pick up the same habit.
Clear on unacceptability around Spitting – Make it crystal clear for the child that a habit or action like spitting is not acceptable at all. No need to give a lengthy lecture, you may keep it short but clear.

Ask the child to clean his spit – This idea could be quite helpful in reducing the habit because the child knows that if he or she spits, they’ll have to clean or wash it off. So, just to avoid that extra work they might have to do, it might just work.
Give your child a timeout – Timeouts do work on some and not on some others but if your child knows about time out then it would work in that case. Giving a time out helps children calm themselves down.

Rebate system – This system could help as well. For example if your kid spits on another kid ask your kid to lend their toy to that kid for a day.
Guide your child – You can help your child out with anger management and how to use words over spitting. Gradually your child will learn to manage his or her anger and calm self down.

Reward System – A reward system usually works. So, If you find that your this methodology could be used with your child. Keep a behavior chart for your child and keep it creative with stickers and stars and smileys a stuff. When your child abides by it, praise him or her and encourage. This can help the child get rid of the spitting habit.

Considering lifestyle of us Indians today, obesity is a major issue arising out of it and not only are the adults bearing a brunt of this monster called obesity but so are the children, around the globe as well as in India. The major reasons are sedentary lifestyle and junk foods. So, how do we tackle this grave issue called obesity that has been spreading its claws across the country? Physical exercise is one of the possible answers to this question. Additionally, neurology experts in USA have claimed that exercise not only helps in regulating the blood flow but it also helps in promoting neurogenesis, a process that is known to generate neurons in the brain. To say the least, it helps a child’s developing brain.
Here is a run down on how you can kill two birds with one stone; meaning how exercise not only helps in physical fitness and growth of your child but also helps in his/ her brain development.

Cognitive Skills
Here is an important piece of information about the inter-relation of exercise and attention paying or concentration ability. Apparently, exercise or engaging in physical activities helps increase concentration, thus improving cognitive control – ability of paying attention. It is particularly useful for kids who face difficulties with concentrating, for example, kids with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorders) face grave difficulty in paying attention. But, an exercise session before a task that requires attention, helps them increase or rather control their attention span.

Blood Flow Regulation
While a healthy diet is responsible for increased blood flow, exercise is an activity that helps maintain it. A better flow of blood ensures a fit body and also helps in brain development as it increases the flow of blood to the brain, reduces stress levels due to increased levels of neropinephrine and endorphins and affects mood states positively.

Decreased Cardiovascular Risk
Regularly exercising in childhood can help reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases in adulthood. It is also responsible for improving quality of life associated with health.

In this age when academic pressures on children are rising by leaps and bounds, mental health and physical fitness go hand in hand in keeping kids mind and body at peace. Exercise, thus plays a significant role in keeping kids physical active, away from obesity and mentally fit as well.

Founded in 2007, Vydehi school is an initiative by Vydehi Group for rehabilitation of children with special needs. As on day, the school has 72 children with autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, cognitive impairment, down’s syndrome, visual impairment and multiple disabilities too.

The school runs across 9.30 am and 1 pm, 5 days a week. The curriculum is customized as per individual student requirements and focuses on development of cognitive, communication, socialization and motor skills. The school maintains a student teacher ratio of 1:6 and their main objective is to provide inclusive education to the special children without discrimination. It focuses on identifying individual abilities of students and making optimum use of them for their life long benefit.

Brigance Diagnostic has been added to the schools arsenal in 2009, already. This inventory has helped meet the needs of individual students, develop measurable goals and monitor their progress efficiently, ever since.

Being an integral part of Vydehi group, Vydehi School is supported by Vydehi Institute of Rehabilitation(VIR) and both the rehabilitation setups work in a close knit way to meet the needs of children, patients and people. While the special educators from school render their services to VIR on a need to need basis, specialists like speech therapists, physiotherapists and more from VIR serve the needs associated with the school children regularly.

The school also offers one-on-one sessions of 1 hour duration to all age groups besides remedial education for students with learning disabilities. Furthermore, it provides home based services for differently-abled children residing in far of areas of the city.

Well, for over a decade now, Vydehi school nestled in Vydehi School of Excellence campus has been working towards providing equal education opportunities to special children for their independence and betterment of their future.

Whitefield is one of areas in Bangalore which has many corporate parks, IT hubs, offices of corporate giants and hence is densely populated. There are many schools also in and around the area. One such school which is taking the ratings by storm is Vydehi School of Excellence. In just a few years of its inception, this school has made a mark for itself. Today, it has already found its place in the top 10 schools of Whitefield.

Its pretty much an achievement, because Vydehi School of Excellence, a part of Vydehi group was founded not long before in the year 2009. In a short span of 6 years the school has earned itself immense recognition and popularity, primarily due to its holistic approach and international standards.

With a mission of fostering young minds to create leaders of tomorrow and instill in them values and etiquettes that last forever, Vydehi School of Excellence has crafted a curriculum that is a perfect concoction of scholastic and non scholastic activities. The school focuses on unleashing every child’s potential through comprehensive development that includes physical, social and moral aspects. Extra curricular abilities are also given equal emphasis and include sports and creative activities. Experiential learning forms an integral part of its education program. The quality teaching methodology and learned faculty.

With a clinical Psychologist and a dietician on board, it takes due care of mental health of its children and food habits as well. The lip-smacking menu offered is created after general medical evaluation and parents consultation. It is based on the recommendations of the dietician and is a healthy balance of nutrients needed for growing children.

Vydehi School of excellence is spread across an expansive campus of over 200,000 sqft and is all equipped with hi-tech facilities that include smart digital classrooms, fully equipped computer labs, well stocked library and media room, advanced learning labs for Mathematics, Science and English Subjects, CCTV surveillance round the clock and GPS connected transport.

Above all, what makes this school one of the most sought after schools in whitefield is its affordability inspite of such extravagant facilities it provides. This is only because the preliminary objective of Vydehi group while conceptualizing this educational setup has solely been imparting high quality education to grassroot levels of the society. Just like their other endeavors be it Institute of medical, dental and nursing sciences, Vydehi Hospital or more, it is primarily about serving the society and hence, the fee structure has been set in such a way that it is within reach of the middle class people who aspire to provide high quality education to their children, but finances serve as big road blocks while trying to realize them.

In a nutshell, Vydehi School is an outstanding educational platform for fostering young minds through holistic education and truly so – a school of excellence.

“Fairness is not giving everyone the same thing,
Fairness is giving each person what they need to succeed”

These days we hear a lot about the term inclusive education. Suddenly these alien concepts are the norm in our country and everyone is talking about it.

However, believe me, it is a good thing and this topic needs all the attention it can get.
So let us begin with the classic explanation.

“Inclusive education happens when children with and without disabilities participate and learn together in the same classes. Research shows that when a child with disabilities attends classes alongside peers who do not have disabilities, good things happen”.

Roots of inclusive education can be traced back to the 1950s in USA & Canada where reputed universities experimented with integration of students with severe disabilities pioneered by inclusion teachers, who believe in participatory learning, cooperative learning, and inclusive classrooms.

In India, though we have been approaching inclusion since quite some time, we have a lot to achieve. The society has come a long way from fear, negligence, pity & sympathy towards empathy.

Our constitution provides for education as the fundamental right to all children, but until the recent Right to Education Act, introduced in 2012 schools were at liberty whether or not to grant admission to students with special needs.

Government can make laws and provide infrastructure, but it all depends on the other stakeholders (Schools, Parents, and Teachers) on how we perceive inclusive education & our willingness to take it forward. Reluctance also stems from the fact that inclusive education is a guaranteed high return long-term investment but with very high premium in the short term.

It is not only important to provide infrastructure like ramps, toilets, accessibility to laboratories, playground, etc but also to identify and support children with learning and mental disabilities. Lack of flexibility in curriculum, affordability, being bullied in the class and not getting adequate attention from the teachers are other contributing factors, which stall inclusive education.

We must all understand that “All children can learn” but “All children learn differently” & Special education is not inclusive education.

The Inclusive Education Clause in the RTE Act is an important step in the right direction. It also helps regular kids. When they attend classes that reflect the similarities and differences of people in the real world, they learn to appreciate diversity.

So let us all strive to improve the status of inclusive education within our respective spheres of influence. What begins with a sense of responsibility & compassion culminates in a feeling of pride when the children reciprocate with joy & passion that make our efforts pale in comparison.
